Northeast Spain’s Province of Catalonia continues to be the picture perfect off-season cycling mecca of many pro cycling teams, who are lured by the countryside’s good weather, mountains, Mediterranean ocean-side locales and scenic, solitary roads. Girona, just an hour north of Barcelona, is brimming with Old World Mediterranean charm, cobblestone streets, centuries old architecture, monasteries, great local dishes and the region’s finest wines. It is also the starting point of this cycling adventure that former Danish cycling coach Johnny Weltz began to take young up-and-coming North American cyclists on almost 20 years ago.
The trip takes riders through the foothills of the snow-dusted Pyrennes close to the seacoast, where they will discover plenty of varied terrain from slow and easy to all-out climbs. An experience not to be missed.
